Salt
“You could live the rest of your life without eating another granule of sugar, but you can’t stay alive for very long without salt.”

I have found that it is relatively easy to find information about how to have a healthy life, we must cut out the three evils: Salt, Sugar, and Fat.
One of the main reasons I started writing for the Urban Farm Lifestyle was the very obvious obesity that one can see in society, especially our children.
We have been told that it is our fault that we are fat.
We watch too much TV, sit behind a screen for too long, make bad eating choices, and above all get too little exercise.
Today we are finding out that this is only partially true.
I agree that we need to exercise more, especially outside in the open air.
I have found out that it is not as simple to live a healthy lifestyle as we may have been led to believe.
The animal fat that we have been told is bad for us, is not necessarily true.
We have been led to believe that we all need to limit our salt intake to as little as possible to remain or become healthy.
Salt
We have been told that sugar was not necessarily a bad thing and that moderation didn’t cause any problems.
I myself have promoted these concepts to some extent in my articles except I always really wondered about sugar intake.
That is because, during different points of my life, I have consumed way more sugar than I should have.
I have always been able to wean myself off of sugar until the next holiday or birthday.
I find it very hard to think of Thanksgiving without Pecan Pie!
Which of course is made with high fructose sugar.
The worst thing to consume is sugar but is in almost every processed food that we buy.
So, if we cut out our fat intake, remove salt from our diet as much as possible, then why is our western society so sick and fat?
Sorry about being so blunt but it is true.
This all leads up to tell you about a book I just read, The Salt Fix by Dr. James DiNicolantonio.
We all nowadays hear the claim that we must follow the “science”, but to do that you must also follow the money behind the science and the lobbyist.
Dr. James DiNicolantonio states on the cover of the book about salt intake, “Why the Experts Got It All Wrong—and How Eating More Might Save Your Life”.
That is a pretty strong statement.
When Molly was having health problems, she was put on a low salt diet.
That seems to be the standard procedure followed by the medical profession.
I myself tried to follow a low or no salt diet in the belief that I was helping my body.
In the book, Dr. DiNicolantonio lays out the research behind the war on salt for what we have been told causes high blood pressure, heart disease, and many other ailments from this crystal.
He lays out the timeline of the research and the results extrapolated from the data.
His book tells how salt doesn’t cause high blood pressure, what really causes heart disease, how we are starving on the inside, how we can kick the sugar addiction with salt, and how much salt your body needs.
Almost everything I thought I knew that was true about salt intake was challenged in this book.
Of course, I have to make a disclaimer herein that any changes made to your diet, especially if you are on medication, should be consulted with your doctor.
I would recommend reading this book if for no other reason than you get another side of the story about salt.
One thing I can safely say is that sugar has been over-protected through the years.
I believe that a least a reduction in sugar, especially added sugars would be of great benefit to all of us.
It may not benefit the manufactures that put the added sugars in their products but I think they can and should adapt to what is really healthy for their consumer, not just their bottom line.
I am all for our country becoming healthier in a natural way, instead of treating the symptoms of lifestyles, change or eliminate the causes of the symptoms.
